Unalakaleet has a proud heritage that starts with it’s name Unalakleet, which is s word taken from Inupiaq meaning “from the southern side”. This is also the first checkpoint on the Norton Sound for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. While those living in the area know of this wonderful place, there is much to offer those in search of an Alaska Fishing Lodge.
The Unalakaleet River Lodge is located about four hundred miles to the northwest of Anchorage on the Norton Sound (Bering Sea). It can be reach by air, a service that runs daily from Anchorage. While the lodge bears the name, the actual village of Unalakaleet is about ten miles away.
One cannot help but feel like they have stepped out of time to a place in the past, as the sight of hand-hewn log buildings welcomes you. This is true for both the large main lodge and the cabins you will stay in. The main lodge itself offers a truly spectacular view of the natural surrounds from its place atop the hill.
Accommodations at Unalakaleet River Lodge are wonderful, with cabins sporting twin or king size beds. In addition, you will have a few more creature comforts than the mountain men and eskimos from a century ago. Full baths and electric heat help to make a comfortable and very relaxing retreat in the log cabins.
As expected, you will have the opportunity to enjoy some of the most varied fishing Alaska has to offer. King Salmon runs June through Mid-July which is when the Silver Salmon run starts, running through mid-September. Dolly Varden and Artic Grayling are to be found June through mid-September. Chum Salmon and Artic Char usually can be found from midway through the month of June until mid-August. Pink Salmon traditionally have a short run in the middle of the season for the month of July.
Unalakaleet River Lodge has complete packages that include with your accomodations; daily housekeeping, evening Hors d’oeuvres, all meals, and wine with dinner. One the fishing side of your package, you fishing license is included for the length of your stay and fully guided fishing. I would recommend contacting them for the package that suites you best.
If a picture is worth a thousand words, then you will come home with millions of memories from your stay at this Alaska Fishing Lodge. For the sight-seer there is Alaska’s natural beauty in this unspoiled setting. If you are the fisherman/woman, it does not matter if you enjoy baitcasting or fly-fishing, there is a memorable trip waiting for you at Unalakaleet River Lodge.
